As a young married couple we moved to Lakeland, FL for Mica to attend Southeastern University. To save money we moved on campus. Living in a very small apartment, we often felt claustrophobic. Our little kitchen could only fit one person, so we would have to take turns cooking and washing dishes.

Since we were poor college students, we had to be creative with our dates! One thing we really enjoyed was packing a picnic and eating on the front lawn of Southeastern’s campus. We had a scenic view of the lake. Taking our time, we savored our food, soaked in the view, and most of all, enjoyed meaningful conversations with each other.

You don’t need lobster or steak to have a great date! Some of our best dates were eating grilled cheese basting in the beauty of a picturesque view. Here are some of our five of our all-time favorite low-budget, high-return dates.

  1. Picnics – Spread a blanket. Have cheese and crackers with your favorite sparkling drink. A go-to for us is sharing a Publix sub when money is tight. It’s not about the food; it’s about the company!
  2. Dessert – If your relationship feels like a rocky road go out for ice cream. A little chocolate may bring back that loving feeling!
  3. Movies – In our town, we have $2 Tuesday at our local theater. The staff will shine a flashlight after the movie starts to make sure you don’t bring in your own snacks. Don’t ask me how I know this!
  4. Take a Walk – During our time at Southeastern, we also enjoyed long walks around the soccer field. There, we had many intimate conversations as we walked shoulder to shoulder. The bonus was that we got great exercise as well!
  5. Bookstore – Yes, we have been known to loiter at a book store or the local library. We both love books and knowledge. We would usually go to the book store to see what books were newly published, then request whatever book we wanted from the library. Libraries also have movies to check out for free!
